Name Changing
To legally change your name in England, all you need to do is fill in a deed poll change of name document, which is free, and I have a template linked here: “Deed Poll Template”.
To use this template, remove where it says “OLD NAME” “NEW NAME” “DAY DATE MONTH YEAR”, “ADDRESS EXCLUDING COUNTY” “COUNTY” etcetera, and fill them in with the appropriate bits of wording. Linked here: “Example Deed Poll” is a filled out example of the change of name of Josephine Bloggs to Joseph Bloggs so you can see how it’s done. If you’re stuck, email jamie@transmen.org.uk with your name and address, the date you want to change your name, and the names and addresses of your two witnesses, and I’ll email it back to you for now. Soon I hope to implement an automatic deed poll filler!
When you have filled in the typed bits, buy some nice parchament paper, and print it out. I’d advise printing at least ten copies, since lots of places will want the original, and signing them. Once you’ve done that, distribute them out. The passport office accepts name changes by deed poll, so once you’ve changed it on your passport, you can show that alongside the deed poll to anyone who refused to change your details by deed poll alone.
If you wish to change your title as well, simply send off a covering letter explaining that you live as male and hence wish to have the title “Mr” on your records from now on. Titles hold no legal bearing, so if you want to change your title you can do so. If they cause a fuss, point this out.
To change your gender marker on your passport and your DVLA license number, you also need a letter from your doctor stating you are undergoing a permanent change in gender role, as a part of gender reassignment, and as a result your records should be changed to male.
